The Grand Ledge community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Chong Bedard, a beloved teacher at Willow Ridge Elementary School, who passed away Wednesday evening. News of her death was shared with families and staff by Grand Ledge Public Schools Superintendent Bill Barnes in a letter sent Thursday, prompting an outpouring of grief and support across the district.
Mrs. Bedard was remembered as a dedicated educator who made a lasting impact on countless students, families, coworkers, and friends throughout her many years with the school district. In his message to families, Barnes reflected on the positive influence she had within the community and expressed condolences on behalf of the district to all who knew and loved her.
“Mrs. Bedard worked in Grand Ledge Public Schools for many years, and she had a positive impact on many students, families, colleagues, and friends throughout our school community,” Barnes wrote. He later added, “On behalf of Grand Ledge Public Schools, I extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Bedard’s family, friends, colleagues, students, and all who knew and loved her.”
In response to the tragic loss, several schools within the district were closed Thursday to allow staff members time to process the news and support one another. Schools closed included Delta Center Elementary School, Holbrook Elementary School, Wacousta Elementary School, and Willow Ridge Elementary. Early childhood programs such as Little Comets, the Great Start Readiness Program, Head Start, and Early Childhood Special Education were also canceled, along with the district’s Adventure Club childcare program.
Meanwhile, Grand Ledge High School, Beagle Middle School, and Hayes Intermediate School remained open.
Barnes explained that the decision to close several schools was made out of respect for staff members who worked closely with Mrs. Bedard. He emphasized the importance of allowing teachers and employees an opportunity to receive the news directly from leadership and grieve before returning to the classroom.
The district also confirmed that counselors and crisis support teams would be available for students and staff members affected by the loss. Support services are expected to continue as students return to school.
