Evelyn Cox Hobbs Death Obituary, Founding Member of The Cox Family Has Died

Evelyn Marie Cox Hobbs, 66, of Vivian, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at her home on May 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Her passing marks the loss of a gifted musician, devoted wife and mother, treasured grandmother, and beloved member of the Louisiana music community whose life touched countless people through both her talent and her kindness.

Born on June 20, 1959, Evelyn was raised in Cotton Valley, Louisiana, where her extraordinary musical abilities became evident at an early age. As one of the founding members of The Cox Family, Evelyn helped create a musical legacy that would become widely respected across the world of bluegrass and gospel music. Alongside her father, brother, and sisters, she graced stages across the country, sharing heartfelt performances that inspired audiences for decades.

Throughout her remarkable career, Evelyn performed with legendary artists including Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Charlie Daniels, and Counting Crows. Her incredible contributions to music earned her two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations, accomplishments that reflected both her immense talent and dedication to her craft.

Despite her success, Evelyn remained deeply grounded in family and faith. Music was not simply a profession to her—it was part of who she was. Even after performances ended, she could often be found at family gatherings with a guitar in hand, singing and creating memories with those she loved most. Her joy for music was matched only by the love she had for her family.

Above all else, Evelyn cherished her role as a grandmother. She adored her grandchildren—Liam, Camden, and Brynn—and poured endless love into every moment spent with them. Whether hosting tea parties, taking them swimming, or filling the home with Christmas joy and laughter, she created memories her family will forever treasure.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 49 years, William “Marv” Hobbs Jr.; daughters Melody and Christin (Brad); grandchildren Liam, Camden, and Brynn; siblings Lynn Thurman, Sidney Cox (Christie), and Suzanne Ratcliff (Bob); as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Marie Cox, and her in-laws, William M. Sr. and Irene Hobbs.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 8, 2026, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and services at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Gilead Cemetery.

Evelyn Marie Cox Hobbs will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her music, her love, and the joy she brought into the lives of so many.
